Lean Leadership for a Culture Transformation
Most companies embarking on a lean journey soon become frustrated with kaizen events and isolated improvement projects that yield great short-term results but have no sustainability. They are searching for something more and this hands- on Strategy Deployment and Floor Management Development System aligns people to cultivate a culture of problem solving.
The course is intended to demonstrate how to coach leadership in connecting and simultaneously developing the “Product” and the “People” Value Streams in your organization which will drive the long term lean transformation resulting in increased profitability and long term mutual prosperity.
The workshop will also discuss how to “bring to life” the Values a Company has set as their guiding principles or mission statements. We will do this by explaining the specific steps/actions to consider while using problem-solving processes in daily activities (i.e. – communication, buy-in, engagement, purpose, customer satisfaction and more). We will discuss each participant’s “Line of Sight” to the company goals or business plan (Hoshin), normally centered around the key performance indicators (i.e. Quality, Cost, Productivity, Safety, and HR Development). How to integrate this into a “Daily Management Development System” will also be discussed and practiced.
Mike Hoseus, co-author of Tovota Culture, will review how a Lean Organization establishes their culture for problem solving at all levels. The HOST COMPANY (To Be Announced) will open up their facility for the hands-on application of the Strategy Deployment and Floor Management Development System.
In this program participants are broken up into groups to look at their “True North” and work to make more simple, clear and understandable, goals for:
- Productivity (Delivery, Service)
- People (HRD, Engagement)
You will discuss roles for each level of the organization and discuss recommendations for “Leader Standard Work, Daily FMDS (huddle meetings), Gemba Walks, Standardized Work and 5-S Audits, etc.
With Mike Hoseus’ coaching, each team goes into gemba, gathering data for each main KPI, then makes a PDCA” recommendation for three management layers. Each team recommends a “Sub KPI” for each respective “Pillar,” e.g., Safety, etc.
Each team recommends “Process” measures for each Pillar. These are done at the “Strategic Level” and are meant to address the big system problems.
Each team then designs a system to daily identify Problems, Prioritize them, and then “Register them.” Teams utilize a “Registered Item” list to track the assignment, progress toward root cause ID and countermeasures, and finally closure. Teams design a system to “escalate” problems they can’t close to the next level.

- Understand why simply focusing on cost cutting in these challenging times is the wrong approach.
- Learn why “delegating lean” to others doesn’t work, and may actually hurt your bottom line.
- Understand how having the wrong performance measures can negatively affect your organization.
- Learn how to use lean to link your business needs to your daily activities.
- Understand and implement processes and systems to sustain your improvement activity.
Workshop Facilitator: Mike Hoseus
Mike Hoseus is Executive Director of the Center for Quality People & Organizations (CQPO). Mike brings both manufacturing operations and specialization in Human Resource experience to CQPO. CQPO current projects with Toyota include New Hire selection and training process, Team Leader and Group Leader post promotion training, Quality Circle Leader and Manager training, and Global Problem Solving for all levels. Mike is an adjunct professor with the University of Kentucky’s Lean Manufacturing Program. Mike is co author with CQPO and Dr. Jeffery Liker (Author of the Toyota Way) of Toyota Culture. Mike is also president of CMH Inc.
Prior to CQPO, Mike was a corporate leader for 13 years at Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s Georgetown, Kentucky, plant both in Human Resources and Manufacturing. As Assistant General Manager in Human Resources, his responsibilities included personnel, safety, HR development, employee relations, benefits, training, and manufacturing/human resource teams for a plant of 8000 team members. His major initiative was development of the enhanced relationship between Human Resource and Manufacturing Mike’s operational responsibilities in manufacturing started in 1987 as a front line supervisor in vehicle assembly. This included all aspects of safety, quality, productivity, cost and morale for operations. With experience as Assembly Plant Manager and eventually Assistant General Manager, his responsibilities increased to include both assembly plants including operations, maintenance, and engineering. He is a Toyota Certified Trainer in Global Problem Solving & Waste Reduction, Standardized Work and Kaizen Events.
Mike has served and contributed to numerous community boards such as the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the Lexington Mayor’s Partnership for Youth. Mike has degrees in Business and Psychology from Xavier University and a Masters of Arts in Counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary. Mike’s wife, Suzy and he are co-founders of CMH, Inc. and Life Learning Ministries and have three children, Ben, Leah and Lindsay.

Also, MRC must be notified two weeks in advance of this event if you need to cancel, otherwise we can only grant a credit to another MRC event. Presenters give us cancellation deadlines also, otherwise we forfeit fees, as well. Remember, you can also send a substitute.
