This course is designed specifically for individuals who have never taken a mechanical drawing course. This course employs a blended learning curriculum which includes instructor-led lectures/discussions, demonstration models to enhance learning, supplemental videos, and intensive in-class, hands-on exercises involving reading and interpreting blueprints. CAD and solid modeling are discussed and put into context, however this is a foundational course and, as such, students will learn fundamentals which may stimulate a desire to pursue CAD or solid modeling as a follow-on course.
This course will provide students with a solid foundation in “the language of industry” and an introductory level of competency in beginning blueprint reading. Students will be prepared for employment involving blueprint reading and for further study.
Instructional Guidance Checklist:
- Foundational presentation/discussion (a new way of thinking; alphabet of lines; isometric and orthographic projection; scale; tolerance);
- Between twenty and thirty-five hands-on exercises (to include models as needed), depending on course length;
- Two “instructor assessments” (check-up quizzes) to ascertain instructor’s effectiveness in conveying material before advancing to next level of the subject.

Donna Cubberly is a documentation-oriented, electromechanical engineering professional with thirty-five years of industry experience, an advanced degree, college-level teaching, and training experience. She has held a top secret security clearance (TS/SCI with polygraph) and has particular strengths in design analysis, concurrent engineering (DFMA), and fabrication/manufacturing. She has a strong, diverse technical background and hands-on experience in operations, engineering, R&D, quality assurance (ISO standards), auditing, product/process development and project management in a wide variety of highly-regulated, high-reliability and disciplined change control job shop environments requiring consistent repeatability. She has amassed a large arsenal of technical/scientific experience and a wide exposure to multiple industries including defense, aerospace, medical, shipbuilding, aviation, solar energy, nuclear energy, electronics/optoelectronics, photonics, semiconductors, telecommunications, consumer products, and proof testing machine technology for the rigging industry. She has had extensive involvement with AS9100, ISO 9001, ISO 17025, ISO 13485, and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) including operational interpretation of various Titles and Parts thereof. In addition, the common denominator in all of her experience has been the requirement of providing a wide variety of technical documentation, including manufacturing work instructions which were informed by military standards (MIL-STDs), specifications (MIL-SPECs), and IPC/ANSI standards. She is a qualified internal auditor, provides internal auditor training against ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D, and consulting services to assist organizations in upgrading to ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D. Ms. Cubberly served in the military, both as an enlisted petty officer and commissioned line officer (US Coast Guard; US Navy).
