Customized Training Helps Cougle’s Recycling, Inc. Create and Maintain Positive Company Culture
“The senior leadership training topics came from team member feedback; they really represented the pulse of the company.”
– Tiffany Macaulay, an Owner, Public Relations and Marketing
Following a successful recent round of Supervisor- and Manager Training courses, attendees suggested that upper management might also benefit from similar training to create a more cohesive environment and continue to build the positively trending team dynamic. While customers are Cougle’s lifeblood, the strength of its teams allows the company to serve them with excellence. As Cougle’s strives to exhibit its core values—“Reliability Intergity Saftey Environiment Excellence”—they also wanted to improve their skills as a company with and through the team, so the company engaged MRC for onsite training.
Solution
The courses selected included private Supervisor- and Executive Leadership Training courses delivered at the Cougle’s Recycling, Inc. (CRI) facility in Hamburg. In addition to dividing attendees into two groups to ensure sufficient coverage in the plant, Cougle’s worked to find times that would have the least impact on the production schedule. “Driving to MRC, completing the day’s training, and driving back would have been disruptive,” says Tiffany Macaulay, an Owner and Public Relations and Marketing. “This was a great approach for us.”
Another way that MRC customized the training to Cougle’s specific needs was to develop a curriculum that would be challenging while maximizing value. “They tailored that as well,” Macaulay says. “Matthew (COO), Mike (HR Director), and I selected the topics, which included time management, stress management, and a few others. The topics were hand-picked, so attendees were learning from examples that come up every day in our facility.”
Macaulay says MRC’s approach was varied and especially engaging, incorporating a series of presentations, group work to illustrate and reinforce key points, video, written work, and even some role playing to mimic real-life situations. “Overall, the attendees were appreciative of the topics that were included,” she says. “And the facilitators were as helpful as they were impactful.”
One exercise dealt with owning responsibilities—a phrase that’s become a catchword around the plant. “You hear people saying ‘I’m going to own that’ all the time,” Macaulay says. “We really do take it seriously.”
The resulting knowledge, coupled with a survey conducted following the first training round, has helped the staff to better understand the needs for improvement and pushed the cultural change. “It’s so important to keep things positive and keep things moving in the right direction,” Macaulay says.
Results
